Thrift Store Fort Belvoir - FORT BELVOIR, VA. -- Saturday was a special night for four local teenagers as they joined the ranks of Eagle Scouts with Fort Belvoir's Boy Scout Troop 118.
Standing before a room full of family and friends inside the Fairfax Village Neighborhood Center, Scouts Nick Kellogg, Steven Funk, Joseph Samuels and Christopher Williams spoke candidly about what the honor means to each of them.

Kellogg, a senior at Mount Vernon High School, got his start in scouting years ago as a Bear Scout while living in California. He joined Troop 118 in January 2007 and leads patrols for the Falcon Patrol. Last summer, he ended his time with the troop by successfully leading eight other scouts and three adults on a 78-mile trek through the mountains of New Mexico.

To earn his Eagle badge, Kellogg gathered a group of fellow scouts and helped repaint the parking lot of Belvoir's grocery store—completing the job in just two days. During his acceptance speech, Kellogg was quick to point out the support of all his friends and family, especially his mother Sandy.
"Even though he's Canadian, he helped me a lot to become an American Eagle Scout," Kellogg said with a laugh. "It's something I'm very proud of and being an Eagle Scout is something I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. The skills I've learned and the people I've met have made me a better person."
Like his peers, Funk attends Mount Vernon High where he is a member of the soccer and lacrosse teams. He has been a member of Troop 118 for over five years and has held many leadership positions, including patrol leader, troop leader and troop leader.
He has been awarded numerous awards and has attended six summer camps and over 50 military camps. His Eagle project was the renovation of the Belvoir Youth Baseball Center and Recreation Center. All in all, Funk said he spent about two years with other scouts organizing, painting and cleaning.

For Funk, the evening's ceremony was very emotional, as his scoutmaster father, Mark, presented his troop with the Eagle badge.
He also presented an Eagle pin to Jaye Urban, mother of Sean's best friend, who was unable to attend due to a commitment to basic training.
"It's been 25 years since my dad became an Eagle Scout and now I feel like I'm standing on top of the peak with him. It's great," Funk said proudly. "He is not only my father but also my mentor.
Sean and I are great friends and I know I couldn't have done it without him. Being an eagle scout helps me to live and I see that people look at me differently. They see me as a leader and that is very valuable in life."

Samuels has been scouting for over 10 years, starting Tiger Scouting six years ago. A clarinet player in the West Springfield High School Concert Band, she also plays soccer and was recently honored as a student ambassador in a program that took her to schools in Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
The son of two officers, Samuels worked with other scouts to restore the nature trail behind the Beth El Synagogue in Alexandria.
"I have grown and matured so much in my time with Troop 118. I have more confidence and am a better person than my friends, family and fellow scouts," Samuels said.
"This troupe taught me to worry less about myself and care more about others. It's a great lesson and that's how I want to live my life."

Williams is a junior at Lake Braddock High School and a member of the football and basketball teams. A talented athlete with a 3.4 GPA, his parents, Darlene and Thomas, introduced him to scouting 10 years ago.
For the Eagle project, Williams decided to take on the task of renovating the Belvoir Youth Club barn. On the way he took inventory of all the equipment, swept the warehouse, labeled the boxes and cleaned all the helmets.
"I couldn't have done it without the support of my family and friends, especially Mr. Funk, who is like a second father to me," Williams said. "Eagle Scouts are an example for other Scouts to follow and I am privileged to be part of such an elite class."
During his closing speech, Scoutmaster Funk congratulated these four teenagers for their success in the army and the community. He said later becoming an Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable through the Boy Scouts of America.
